A wave of worker complaints and injuries at an L.A. waste and recycling facility owned by American Reclamation — just a few months after the tragic deaths of two young workers at a Crown Disposal Services facility north of LA — has drawn heated attention to an industry which LAANE’s Don’t Waste LA project is seeking to change. Both facilities are under investigation by Cal/OSHA for serious health and safety violations.
Don’t Waste LA led a rally of environmental, community and labor partners outside American Reclamation, culminating in an attempted walk-through of the facility by L.A. City Councilmember Richard Alarcon and other leaders. Councilmember Alarcon, who had been joined during the rally by L.A. City Councilmember Eric Garcetti in expressing concern for the safety of workers at the facility, was refused entrance. Waste companies can shut their facility doors and hide what’s inside, but they can’t hide it when workers are hurt or when they die.
